Have you dined at Calle Z Café Sugbu, yet? The “Home of Tacloban’s Best Bulalo” is now in town, offering its best dishes to the foodies of Cebu.
I got really curious when I saw a friend’s series of posts about this restaurant. He said Calle Z’s “crispy tenga” was to die for, and that it was his absolute favorite! Another friend also posted about the above-mentioned dish, and said that he could not get enough of it. The two comments from them convinced me to visit the place together with other Cebu Food Bloggers last week.
I was out for another food adventure and my goal was to see if Calle Z Café Sugbu is really good as my friends said it to be. Without further ado, here are my top three picks from their best offerings and my final verdict:
1. Calle Z Café Sugbu’s Crispy Tenga (P170)
Calle Z’s Crispy Tenga (Pork Ears) sounds a bit too exotic, I must admit, but it was all that my friends said it was! I see it as a refreshing take on our favorite Chicharon… and it tastes just as good if not better, too! It was so crispy my friends and I were laughing at the loud chewing noise we were making every time we took a bite! I got a takeout order of it! It was THAT good.
2. Calle Z Café Sugbu’s Sisig na Bangus (P160)
This isn’t the first time I have tasted Sisig na Bangus (Milk fish), but Calle Z’s has got to be my new fave! The garlic, bell pepper, and tiny cuts of Bangus complemented each other, making it an absolute appetizer / pampagana! It was one of the viands we finished really fast.
3. Calle Z Café Sugbu’s Bulalo with Rice (P130)
They aren’t called the Home of The Best Bulalo in Tacloban for no reason! Aside from my favorite go-to Bulalo (Beef Shank Soup) place in Panagdait, Calle Z is now one of my top recommended Bulalo-an in town. Although it was a bit greasy for me, I still enjoyed devouring the tender and tasty beef shank they served us.
Calle Z Café Sugbu has come a long way from being a 24-hour convenience store to a must-try restaurant today. I’m so proud of the owners, Nani Ruiz-Banzon and Mike Banzon, for taking this huge step in moving forward from the devastating experience Typhoon Haiyan has brought them and the whole country.
